Street parking, garages and what they mean for a policy

Where you sleep the car is a question on most applications. It is called the garaging address.

The short version

  1. The garaging address is where the vehicle is mostly kept at night.
  2. It is based on a real address, not a mailbox.
  3. Update it when you move, even across town.

Why it is asked

Where a vehicle is kept relates to local conditions such as traffic, weather and theft patterns. Insurers record it to describe the vehicle accurately.

Street, driveway or garage

Some forms ask whether the car is kept on the street, in a driveway or in a garage. Answer based on where it actually sleeps most nights.

Shared and rented spots

If you rent a space in a lot or building, the address of that space can matter. Ask your insurer which address to use.

When you move

A move across town can change the policy. A quick call or online update keeps the record right and avoids surprises at claim time.
